Top 10 Geek Watches

James Bond Watch

Considering the wealth of geek chic wristwear out there at the moment, we started thinking about the point where nerd-tech meets personal style. As far as we’re concerned, no one embodies the aesthetic better than James Bond, a character who has effortlessly turned dorky into dapper at the flick of a wrist. While much of the tech that Bond has had access to was fictional in scope, there is a variety of watches available now that carry on the tradition of tech incorporated into effortless cool. In honor of Bond, we’ve compiled a list of our current nerd-style wristwatch favorites, which we hope will help you channel your inner geek-gent.

Fossil Frank Gehry Watch

gehry 22

If geeking out on the details is your thing, this Frank Gehry- designed Negative/Positive Display watch may be right up your alley. The watch screen features the architect’s own script, displaying time in shorthand: “half past 11,” “6 til 1,” etc. Another neat design quirk about this watch, which we originally saw back in January, is the positive display during the day, which automatically switches to a negative display during the night.

Nixon Dictator Watch

nixon 33

This Nixon Dictator Watch fulfills the childhood fantasy of always having pre-recorded messages on hand for ready-made punchlines. The watch allows you to save up to eight recordings (3.5 minutes total) for the kinds of non-stop pranks that only a geeky kid-at-heart can truly appreciate.

Mr.Gadget 1GB USB 2.0 Executive Watch

mr gadget 44

The name of this 1GB USB 2.0 Watch says it all: Mr. Gadget. If you see yourself as the gadget guy who has a data storage device on him at all times—undoubtedly carrying code or an archive of engadget podcasts—this is the watch for you.

Suunto X9 GPS Watch

suunto 55 01

If you could have one watch on your arm when you’re dropped on a desert island, the Suunto X9 might be the one you’d pick. Equipped with GPS navigation, a compass, a chronograph, an altimeter, and a barometer, this watch has pretty much every form of data reception you would need to successfully survive the wild.

Stanley Expandable Ruler Watch

stanley 66

Sure, if you’re on the construction site and need to be talking regular measurements, you’ve probably got a tape measure attached to your belt. But do you really want to pull out the tape measure every time you want to take finite measurements? The Stanley Ruler Watch is a bit more reasonable for taking on inches or centimeters.

Midas Remote Control Watch

midas 77

Another watch that channels the inner prankster in such a geeky way, the Midas Remote Control Watch is a universal remote on your wrist, an item we came across last year. The watch controls volume, channel, mute, and power on “every make/model of TV and cable receiver imaginable,” making for endless hours of enjoyment that comes from annoying your friends, bartenders, or anyone glued to the television.

Vestal Microdat Watch

vestal 8

You have the vaguest of images in your head about a watch worn by an extra in Blade Runner—someone who spent mere seconds in front of the camera, searing a prop watch into your mind’s eye for decades to come. We like to think that this Vestal Microdat Watch is that timepiece.

High Frequency LED Watch

equalizer 99 01

The height of geek chic, this watch requires explanation to even figure out how it displays time. The Equalizer High Frequency watch LED display mimics an equalizer, pushing a row of lights up and then down (as would sound in an equalizer), ultimately leaving only two dots to indicate the hour and minute. The time is displayed for five seconds before the process starts over again.

Tag Heuer Monaco Sixty-Nine

tag heuer monaco 1010 02

The best chance you’ll ever find to wear the proud tradition of Tag Heuer while simultaneously dismissing the conventional dial form in favor of the digital, the Monaco Sixty-Nine [this is a concept watch that will not be available for sale until the end of the year and will retail for $6,900] blends classic and contemporary with a flip. The watch features two faces—one with a standard two-hand dial form (with a third interior second hand) and the other with a digital readout—that can be flipped for two unique looks.

Cathode Corner Nixie Watch

nixie 1111

This one has OG (Original Geek) written all over it. The Cathode Corner Nixie Watch incorporates two nixie tubes for a two-digit display that features an hour/minute/second sequence. This watch was productdose favorite from late last year, a timepiece that blends mid-20th century tech with timelessly geeky flavor.

I wonder if the Suunto or Mr. Gadget are waterproof... I'd imagine the Suunto to be waterproof, since I can't picture being on a desert island without having to get wet somehow.
