Technology - October 18 2005Communal WiFi0 While most people using WiFi connections never fully use their entire bandwidth, carriers and users alike have remained mostly uninterested in utilizing their extra resources. Realizing this, a Spanish telecommunications company called Fon is in the process of creating a WiFi network that allows subscribers to freely use the signals from other Fon members’ WiFi hotspots. For those who don’t have any use for free roaming, Fon will pay half their monthly service fee in exchange for allowing their signal to be used by other roamers, and the Company guarantees that each user will always be left with at least 50% of their bandwidth. Unfortunately, Fon has not yet released any details on how far the coverage will extend, so there’s no telling whether there will be enough local users in America to even make it worthwhile. Additionally you need to have a Linksys WRT54G to make it all work. But if Fon doesn’t reach over here, you’ll be seeing something like it in the near future. By: robert o'neill |
