Substance - August 22 2006HumanCar Human-Powered Auto6
Currently the subject of moderate Digging--despite being somewhat incorrectly described as a pedal-powered vehicle--the HumanCar is a remarkable efficient (and seemingly safe) vehicle that runs on human power. Requiring an in-vehicle group of four, similar to small a rowing team, the HumanCar leverages the pushing-and-pulling power of its users. Each passenger handles a rowing machine-like "power interface," and all help to create torque around a central crankshaft, which propels the vehicle. The car has been tested at over 60mph, with "incredible handling" for a variety of users, including elderly passengers. Needless to say, Fred Flinstone would have killed for this. It's apparently street legal, with a broad MSRP of between five and seventeen thousand dollars, and you can request ordering information right here. (Check out the brief QuickTime video here.)
