Style - October 03 2006Top Ten Geek Wallets14
Wallets are a pretty good element of style to get geeky with: you can hide them most of the time, only bringing them out for show when you need to buy something or show your geek friends. A lot of guys see full-grain leather as an indicator of a fine wallet, but it takes a particular sensibility to appreciate stainless steel or dot matrix paper. Some guys go for a feature like a see-through license compartment, but it takes a geek to seek out a wallet built with a nano compartment. But one thing we can all agree upon, that George Costanza wallet just doesn't cut it in the tech environment these days. In honor of geeks who accessorize, we present you with the Top Ten Geek Wallets. Click here to see the most popular wallets productdose users shop for.
RFID-Blocking Wallet and Passport Cases: A geek's fascination with technology, its power to monitor the individual, and the methods the individual might use to evade that monitoring is often only a slight distance from paranoia. But that counts, too. RFID tags, like those currently found in passports and a variety of bank cards, can be read through most wallets with a basic receiver. Of course, this RFID Blocking Wallet is made to keep the man out of your business.
Walit Illuminating Wallet: The intention behind the Illuminating Wallet is totally sensible: when you open your wallet in low lighting, the wallet lights up to give you an idea of what bills you are handling. But the kind of glee that comes from having this sort of tricked out billfold can't be measured in sensible terms. Powered by three replaceable watch batteries, the Walit's electroluminescent strip makes it all happen.
DIY Illuminated Wallet: Walluminate: For a die-hard tech geek, the only thing that might improve upon the Illuminating Wallet above is a guide for building it yourself. Make:Blog comes to the rescue, offering the how-to in a trully geek-friendly form: the podcast. Dubbed the Walluminate, this wallet utilizes LEDs from an old cell phone to light the interior bill pocket.
C.E.O. Billfold Wallet (AKA: nano Wallet): It probably didn't take long after the arrival of the first nano for someone to realize that it was thin enough for him to slip into his wallet. Thereafter, it likely wasn't long before some designer set to creating a wallet built specifically for an iPod. This full-leather C.E.O. Billfold Wallet looks great as a wallet on its own, featuring standard credit card pockets and clear ID pocket alongside a nano pocket with a plastic screen cover, a click wheel protector, and ready access to both the hold button and the earphone jack.
Mophie Knox Aluminum nano Wallet: By the time the 2nd generation nano rolled around, a few people who had used the nano Wallet above had probably realized that smashing the player in that wallet was a real possibility. Enter the Mophie Knox, made with aircraft grade aluminum, designed to hold your iPod on one side and your cash and cards on the other. The wallet's play-through design allows you to plug in while the Knox is closed.
Tyvek Wallet: Rawhide Tri-Fold: If the Dot Matrix Wallet mentioned above is a little too clever for you, this standard Rawhide Tri-Fold should do the trick. The basic wallet is cool and understated, but still features the miracle of Tyvek, a material that, as mentioned above, only a science loving geek can trully understand. The perfect mix of geek and chic--is this not Kevin Rose's wallet?
The Sammy Titanium Wallet: Featuring sheet titanium, a military specification extruded aluminum piano hinge and rivets, and hand finished in a state-of-the-art aerospace facility, this piece, known simply as The Sammy, is enough to geek out on as an industrial gadget. Of course, you also get to carry it around in your pocket as a functional wallet that includes a riveted money clip and and a slot for credit cards and business cards. This one is only for the geeks that can afford it: $320 (Brushed), $340 (Polished). By: robert o'neill |

Steel wallets would be really uncomfortable in your back pocket.. |
|
coverlim (28) |
i have a stainless steel wallet in my pocket (right now) and despite the fact that might sound like sick joke, it really isnt uncomfortable. i think they just have to be small, and in the front pocket. |

duct tape wallets are overrated. gaffers tape is where it's at |
|
gijoemanning (74) |
Ditto what cory said. I got a wallet from DBClay and they use all these industrial tapes and put styles on them. I'm pretty sure I herd about it here..... or it was gizmodo... one of the two here: here |

Reno (1) |
You mention Costanza in the intro, but where is the version as chosen by Kramer? The one where you just fold the notes over the cards. Big notes on the outside of course, to show off the tenners. |

If you hade an IPod in your wallet, your iPod AND wallet would get stolen. If I was a mugger, I would also spit on you just to make the encounter all that much worse. Just look at my sock puppets, yeah, that's what it's all about. |

Where to find it? (No link) |

Love the nano wallet. Now I just need a nano. For the time being, I'll stick with my metal card case from Muji. Carries six cards, which is actually three more that I usually need or ever use. |
frank (NR) |
huh. no photos permitted in comments section? here's a link to a photo of my tape case wallet |
Simon (NR) |
you forgot the 'all-ett' this is for the minimalistic geek. Or at least the one that doesn't want to be carrying a big lump in his/her pocket. here |

I'm currently using a wallet from German company Freitag. I can't recommend this company enough. Good prices for high quality gear and they shipped my wallet to the U.S. in under a week. I also used the All-Ett ultrathin wallet for a few years before this one. I loved that wallet immensely but needed one that looked a little more sophisticated. |
Josh (NR) |
How could you forget about the option of getting a wallet says bad mother fucker on it? If there's one thing a geek loves, it's making references to things. |

I actually have the Hlaska wallet that you guys showed on the site a couple months (? Maybe longer...) ago. I was looking for the leather and suede one, the Metropolis one I think it's called. But the guy I was buying it from didn't have that model, so I ended up getting the one you guys showcased on the site, the canvas and leather, Motel. It's actually a really neat little guy, I get compliments on it, very classy. Haha only that my new jeans started fading onto it, so now its starting to get all blue! Damn you designer jeans. But yeah, thanks! =] |

After using a muji card case for 1 year + I recently upgraded to the jimi (mentioned by Mark in an earlier comment). This wallet is awesome. From Tom Bihn or eBay. |

Tyvek wallets rule. I was abbout to get me one of thems, but I came across a USPS envelope in my room and made my own. |

All of you poor duct tape afficianados need to learn a bit from the Pors - Gaffers tape is far superior to humble duct tape, after the adhesive on dect tape starts to migrate, and guess where it ends up? that's right boys and girls, for most of us wh carry this type of wallet it end up in the old back pocket, where it effectively seals the pocket closed after a trip through the dryer. |

You guys missed a seriously awesome geek wallet here. Full disclosure: I work for Instructables. This is why I know about the wallet. I didn't make it, nor do we sell things like that; it's all stuff our users invent. This one is a really good instructable and IMHO belongs in your top ten :) |
