At first glance, you may think the iCube iRec [product page] is a standard iPod dock. But then a closer look reveals that the device offers much more. While the dock is able to both charge and sync your player, its primary purpose is to get videos onto your iPod. It will accept video from a variety of sources (TV, DVD, camcorder, etc) so long as those sources use a composite or S-Video signal. The device has multiple recording quality options, and it features a timer that shuts off recordings (but cannot start them). I am not an expert on the video formats the iPod takes and I know it's not a recorder, so there is obviously some sort of hardware (re)encoding going on with this device. This product saves you the extra step of running your videos through conversion programs on your computer, but it also greatly limits your customization options. I am hoping the second generation has true PVR capabilities. Imagine clicking on a show while browsing a guide, having the device tune into that show, record it, and drop it on your iPod. In the morning, you just grab it and watch the show on the train to work. The scenario seems maybe a little far fetched, but it's entirely possible, as the iCube iRec includes an internet-upgradeable firmware. | Via Engadget | By: david vo |
