Doormats: Not Just for Welcoming

Most of us are never going to get the chance to design the architecture and facade of our own homes or even live in exactly the home we choose. Sad as it may be to say, the lowly doormat will often stand as the first impression someone has of your home. In the interest of making that impression a good one, we've put together a list of doormats that won't easily be forgotten.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1 Doormat

It's a pretty potent sign of much of a geek you are if you have this in front of your door. In fact, you're likely so much of a geek that you wouldn't recognize that there are people who will approach this No Place Like 127.0.0.1 doormat and have absolutely no idea what this means. Does that make it any more cool? Of course!

Barcode Doormat

Another stroke of genius, this Barcode Doormat hijacks one of the most mundanely iconic symbols in capitalism and tells your friends to rub their feet on it before entering your place. Also, it just looks really cool.

Hare/Hippo Doormats

These twin Hare/Hippo Doormats from Dutch Design house Droog Design approach the realm of art and may be more suited for indoor use. Still, it's hard to pass up putting what might be the most distinctive mat on your block at the entryway to your place.

Back Off (Space Invaders) Doormat

This may be the coolest geek doormat in existence. The mat utilizes flat panel LED's to bring space invaders to glowing life at your doorstep. Powered by two AA batteries, this Space Invaders doormat is unfortunately a visible beacon to grifting teenagers.

Come In/Go Away Doormat

This clever Come In/Go Away doormat from Suck UK reminds anyone coming into your place that your warm welcome can always be repositioned. Never has the hospitality binary been so cleverly displayed.

Binary Doormat

It was too much to hope that this code on this Binary Doormat spelled out "Geek Lives Here," although that's certainly the message most people will take from this doormat. More conventionally, the code states "Welcome," just as you might expect from a proper doormat.

Go Away Doormat

As clever as that Come In/Go Away doormat above is, sometimes only the latter of those messages is going to work. If that's the position you see yourself taking every day, there really couldn't be a better way to express it than with this Go Away Doormat. (Warning:Jehovah's Witnesses will probably ignore the message and just come to your door anyway.)

Bush Doormat

Depending on your political positioning, the fact that this Bush Doormat is currently sold out with no notice of reproduction is either a good or a bad thing. We're not taking any positions.

Feck Off Doormat

You'd be surprised at how difficult it is to find a doormat that says "Fuck Off." But apparently, when Irish people use the term, it comes out as "Feck Off." It gets the point across in America, too.

Come Back with a Warrant Doormat

There's a pretty definite trend in the more distinctive doormats involving messages that state in one way or another that you don't want to be bothered. The criminal tone to this Come Back with a Warrant Doormat here also suggests that violence might be involved if your warning is not headed. Nice touch.
