!!How-To Overview
----
This wiki briefly describes RFID, its uses, its potential dangers,
and why and how to disable its implementation in a US passport.

!!What is RFID

hspace=5 vspace=5 pop=yes]Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) allows
for expedited identification of the object or person the tag is
attached to. Using radio waves, remotely stored data can be accessed
to help identify the object or person associated with or connected to
the tag. The tag itself is a small, grid-like box--commonly affixed by
adhesive--that is either "passive" (contains no internal power supply)
or "Active" (contain an internal power source used to generate an
outgoing IC signal).

!!RFID Uses
----
RFID tags are often attached to consumer goods by large retailers in
order to discourage shoplifting. They can also be found in library
books, warehouse stock tracking of all kinds, and testing with keys
used to access automobiles. There has recently been RFID chip use and
testing for fare payment in transit systems in Asia, Europe, and New
York City. RFID chips have also been variously used in electronic
toll booths, ski lifts in France, video game data storage, induction
heating devices, and many other applications.

RFID tags are increasingly used in international passports. After
January 1, 2007, all passports issued by the US State Department will
feature RFID chips, which will store similar information to what is
printed on the passport. The passports will purportedly feature a
metal lining that will make access to the information nearly
impossible when the passport is closed.

!!Disabling RFID Chips in Passports
----
In the interest of civil liberties threats raised by personal
information made available via radio signal, the issue of destroying
the RFID chip in US passports has been raised. It has been found that
that striking the chip with a solid, blunt object will disable it
without otherwise visibly damaging the passport.
