Brand Overview
Part collective, part traditional design studio, Droog is an Amsterdam-based group of designers and architects focused on contributing, in it's own words, "to a lively culture and discourse on design and to raising awareness of quality and contextuality in designing products and strategies for today's and tomorrow's culture."
Brand History
Droog Design started out as a design show, curated by Renny Ramakers and Gijs Bakker in 1993. The show brought together two dozen designers, all of whom shared a design vision that the two curators described as "Dry," the English translation of "Droog," referring to dry wit, unadorned informality, ascetic irony. "Dry," for Droog, is an essentially Dutch inclination to "do normal" and, at the same time, critically investigate what you are doing and the way you do it.
In subsequent years, Droog would produce installations and presentations all over the world, working with hundreds of designers and artists. For the first several years, the focus remained upon the curatorial vision, evolving into a design aesthetic that would ultimately characterize the production of Droog products.
In 1997, Droog received its first commission, opening a new chapter in the evolution of a growing design collective toward a more traditional design studio. That same year, Droog was awarded two Design Plus awards for the Soft lamp and the Powerpoint lamp. The collective was also presented with the Prix d'Excellence de la Maison from Marie Claire, which recognized the entire Droog collection.
In 1998, Droog was awarded the Dedalus Prize for European Design, judged by Alessandro Mendini, Gilda Bojardi and Francois Burckhardt, for the entire collection's "extraordinary originality and cultural, organizational and methodological skills." One year later, Droog received the George Nelson Design Award, presented by Interiors Magazine, which recognized Droog's outstanding contribution to product design.
In 2003, Droog Factory was established in coordination with the Droog Design Foundation to design and manufacture the growing Droog product collection. In 2004, Droog established corporate headquarters in Amsterdam. The space combines a showroom, a retail space, a library, and domestic quarters.
