Brand Overview
Originally named and inspired by "the generation gap," Gap (The Gap, originally) the brand was conceived as an outlet for the (still relatively new) market that feel between children and adults. Today, Gap, Inc., a $15 billion company is an unavoidably conspicuous element in the global apparel establishment.
Brand History
The Gap was founded in 1969 in San Francisco at the height of the hippie countercultural period by Donald and Doris Fisher (the family still owns 25% of the company). The Gap carried a variety of casual- and work-wear, including Levi's? that had become increasingly popular with counterculture youth in the mid- to late-'60s. The original target market was increasingly unique youth sector that had developed over the decade between established youth and adult markets. The original stores carried a variety of small and private-label brands.
In the '70s, Gap created its own namesake label, relying heavily on denim and basics. In the early '80s, Gap began to push the Gap brand heavily, eventually pulling all other brands from its stores by the beginning of the '90s.
In 1983, Gap purchased Banana Republic and began making a progression toward more upscale clothing design. The safari-wear catalog brand Banana Republic was reintroducing as an upscale version of Gap, and the company later launched Old Navy in 1994, a more affordable version of the classic, basic themes that had become the hallmarks of Gap design.
In 2004 Gap sold all of its German operations to the Swedish brand H&M?. As of October 2006, Gap Inc. had approximately 150,000 employees and operated 3,005 stores worldwide in the US, Canada, UK, France, Japan, Ireland, Singapore, and Malaysia.
