Brand Overview
Pure Design is currently a retail operation based in Corning, NY. The merchant has had an online presence for several years, although the company's first brick and mortar store opened in September of 2006. Before it's current incarnation, Pure Design was a renowned Canadian design studio with a significant global presence that was eventually acquired by Offi in 2004.
Brand History
Pure Design was formed by Edmonton-based industrial designers Randy McCoy, Geoff Lilge, and Dan Hlus in January of 1994. The goal of the founders involved the creation of a collection of pieces that challenged traditional furniture categories and created new ones through a collective emergence of style.
Soon after launching, the company first gained notoriety for it's metal wine and storage racks, most notably its Mantis CD rack. By 1998, Pure Design was earning $3 million in revenue from over 2000 global retail accounts, had produced over 100 products, and employed 30 people. In 2000, Pure Design was commissioned by noted Canadian author Douglas Coupland to manufacture the Hockey Night In Canada coffee table, his own design.
In May of 2001, Pure Design was awarded the prestigious Editors Award for Furniture at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. The following year, Lilge departed. In 2004, McCoy and Hlus sold the production and distribution of Pure Design to OFFI & Company, while both, as well as Lilge, still do independent design work for a variety of companies, including Offi.
Following Pure Design's acquisition by Offi, the two remainning partners also began to focus on Pure Design retail operations. The store was originally envisioned as the the first "Authorized Offi Partner," but it has grown to include products from a variety of designers and manufacturers.
