Brand Overview
simplehuman is a Los Angeles-based company that designs and manufactures housewares. The company specializes in the creation of what it refers to as "tools for efficient living."
Brand History
Founded in January of 2001 by Frank Yang, who now occupies the positions of CEO and Design Director, simplehuman creates stylized, affordable housewares. Yang was formerly a UCLA political science graduate with interests in invention and design. Fueled by the intention to create efficient, visually appealing, and accessible kitchen and home accessories, simplehuman was born.
The company quickly gained notoriety and attention for its kitchen trash cans. The sleek, understated step cans were made from brushed steel and featured universal designs that were accepted as both fashionable and timeless. The Butterfly Step Can gained particular attention during this period, featuring a thin, streamlined body, a narrow footprint, and a center-opening lid. The piece transformed the traditional step can and positioned simplehuman as an innovator in contemporary kitchen accessories design.
Awards followed, most notably from the International Housewares Association, I.D. Magazine, and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) in 2004.simplehuman soon gained increased notoriety for a variety of kitchen and home accessories, including several more trash cans, dish racks, paper towel holders, and a variety of organizational tools.
Currently based in Torrence, CA, simplehuman products are now available in a variety of retail locations, including Williams Sonoma, Bed Bath and Beyond, Lowes Hardware, Target, as well as specialty and boutique retailers.
