Brand Overview
UNIQLO, a subsidiary of Fast Retailing Co., Ltd.?, is a Japan-based manufacturer and retailer of progressive apparel with US headquarters based in New York City. Like Gap or H&M?, UNIQLO is focused on providing apparel with value and style, and the brand produces collections of linen, cashmere, denim, and wool apparel. The name "UNIQLO" is a portmanteau of "unique" and "clothing".
Brand History
UNIQLO began as a men's store in Ube City, Japan in 1948, but the first actual UNIQLO store that would resemble a store today opened in 1984. The company has expanded slowly since the opening of the 1984 store, to England, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and the US.
The brand has recovered from a mismanaged attempt to gain ground in the UK market in 2001 (of 21 stores that opened, only 8 survived) and has since made some adjustments that have made the clothing line itself stronger. Fast Retailing, the UNIQLO parent company, bought a stake in Helmut Lang, and the design aesthetic seems to have spilled over into the final product at UNIQLO.
The company's funky "Container Store" (literally a giant curbside trailer full of clothes) sales method is a little funky, but an interesting attempt to garner some attention leading up to Grand Openings.
A brand-new 36,000 sq. foot flagship store opened November 10, 2006 in SoHo. Other US stores include Menlo Park, Rockaway, and Freehold, all in New Jersey.
